CULTURE AND INTEGRATED SKILLS LESSON

Lesson objectives

Say a traditional rhyme. Develop good citizenship values. Practise vocabulary related to the garden.

Language

Core: oranges, apples, beans, birds, roses, strawberries, pears, I like (beans), I don’t like (strawberries).

Extra: oranges on the table, apples on the shelf, Annabel is getting tired, skipping by herself, Howmany times can she skip? Eat fruit and vegetables every day! Let’s pick the (strawberries).

Review: Numbers

Materials

CD2 $ tracks 71–72; Unit 6 flashcards Set 1 (fruit); coloured pencils

Warmer

Stick the fruit flashcards on the board. The children name each one.

Point to a fruit, e.g. pineapple. Say I like pineapples and rub your tummy. Then point to another fruit, e.g. coconut. Shake your head and say I don’t like coconuts.

Point to each flashcard and encourage the class to respond in the same way according to their likes or dislikes.

Lead-in

Ask the children to open their Class Books and look at the picture in Activity 1.

Ask What can you see? (a girl and two boys, fruit)

Explain that the children are skipping and saying a rhyme.

Class Book

1 Listen and say the traditional rhyme  $ 2•71

Tell the children to listen to the rhyme.

Play the recording all the way through.

Play the recording again, encouraging the children to join in with the rhyme.

Mrs Drew’s Values routine

Point to Mrs Drew and say Here’s Mrs Drew.

Point to the picture and say Mrs Drew says, ‘Eat fruit and vegetables every day!’

Encourage the children to tell you why it is important to eat fruit and vegetables every day.

In following lessons before Unit 7 Lesson 9, praise children who tell you which fruit and vegetables they have eaten that day.

NOTE:  You may like to record their efforts. Put up a big sheet on the wall. Write the title Mrs Drew’s Values at the top. List all the names of the children in your class in a vertical row on the left-hand side. Along the top of the sheet write Unit 1, Unit 2, etc in a horizontal row from left to right. Then explain that the children who eat fruit and vegetables will have a star. Draw or stick a coloured or gold star next to their name when appropriate.

KEY COMPETENCES: Competence in social skills and citizenship

Mrs Drew’s Values routine develops social skills and focuses on civic education. Talk to the children about why it’s important to eat fruit and vegetables every day. Discuss what might happen if children do not eat healthily.

2 Colour and find. Write.

Point to the two pictures in Activity 2 and ask the children what they can see. (beans)

Explain to the children that they should colour correctly the sections with a dot in order to find some more things from the garden. Then they should write the words below each picture.

Check the activity by monitoring. Ask the children to spell the words aloud.

3 Listen and repeat. Point and say.  $ 2•72

Point to Monty and Lola. Ask Who’s this? (Monty / Lola).

Explain that Monty and Lola are talking about Activity 2.

Play the recording. Ask the children to listen. Point to the items in Activity 2 as they are mentioned.

Play the recording again and encourage the children to listen and repeat.

Organize the children into pairs and ask them to take it in turns to say what they like or don’t like.

Activity Book

1 Read and draw.

Ask the children to open their Activity Books and look at Activity 1.

Tell the children to read each sentence and complete the pictures.

2 Draw a garden with three things you like and three things you don’t like. Write.

Ask the children to draw a garden with three things they like and three they don’t like.

Then they complete the sentences using I like (beans) and I don’t like (apples).

Monitor the children as they draw and ask them questions about their drawing, e.g. What’s this? What colour is it? Do you like it?
