1 Circle time andWeather routine

If you have a routine clock, turn the hand to ‘Circle time’ before the start of class.

Start the class with the Circle time routine you have chosen to do with your class.

TEACHING TIP  If you have the time, this is a good point to do a bit of revision with your class. Choose any language from this or previous units and ask questions such as What’s your name? How are you? What’s your favourite colour / toy? Use the flashcards to prompt the children’s answers and support their understanding of the question.

2 Song time: Sweater, jacket, socks and boots & It’s cold outside

Put up the clothes flashcards in the order of the two songs. First play Sweater, jacket, socks and boots and encourage children to join in with singing and actions. Now play It’s cold outside and again encourage children to sing and act out the song.

After you have sung both songs, congratulate the children on how much English they know.

3 Game time: Splash!

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Game time’ and tell the children that they are going to play Splash!

Add the Unit 4 clothes flashcards and the character flashcards to your Splash! games box and play the game, encouraging the children to use the language they have learnt in this unit as fully as they can.

4 Table time: Spot’s portfolio worksheet

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Table time’. Play the Table time rhyme, motioning for the children to go back to their tables.

Give out the Spot’s portfolio worksheet from the previous lesson and encourage the children to finish drawing themselves in their cold weather clothes.

Once the children have finished, ask individuals to point and say some of the clothes they have drawn.

Now play It’s cold outside and encourage the children to point at the clothes they have drawn as they hear them in the song.

Now collect the worksheets and play a guessing game with them. Without showing the pictures to the class, describe different pictures, e.g. Blue jacket, red sweater, blue boots, green mittens. The children must listen carefully and

put their hand up if they think you are describing their picture. If they guess correctly, say Yes! and show the class the picture.

5 Story time: Listen and follow

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Story time’ and play the Story time rhyme .

Tell the children they are going to listen to Let’s make a snowman! and follow the story in their storybooks. Play the story, stopping after each scene and encouraging the children to repeat.

6 Goodbye

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Goodbye’.

Sing the Goodbye song. Have the puppets wave goodbye as you put them away.
