1 Circle time andWeather routine
• If you have a routine clock, turn the hand to ‘Circle time’ before the start of class.
• Start the class with the Circle time routine you have chosen to do with your class.
2 Game time: Dizzy, put on your hat!
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Game time’.
• Display the Unit 4 clothes flashcards. Check the children remember all the actions for the clothes.
• Now tell everyone that they are Dizzy and that you are going to give them instructions. Explain that if they hear you say Dizzy, put on your [+ item of clothing] they must do the action for that item of clothing. However, if you don’t say Dizzy, they shouldn’t do the action.
3 Song time: It’s cold outside
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Song time’ and tell the children that they are going to sing It’s cold outside. The children should sing along and do the actions.
TEACHING TIP To vary this activity, you could encourage the children to continue pretending to be Dizzy while they act out the song. You can use the Dizzy puppet and the unit pop-outs to help you do this.
4 Talk time: It’s cold. It’s snowy.
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Talk time’ and hand out the Frankie talks worksheet.
• Using the Frankie puppet, say It’s cold. It’s snowy. Put on your… and encourage the children to complete the sentence with an appropriate item of clothing. The children should either fold over their chosen item of clothing on their worksheets or point to it.
TEACHING TIP To make this a more controlled activity, you could dictate the item of clothing children choose by holding up a particular flashcard as you start a new instruction.
• Repeat the procedure a few times. If the children are confident enough with the language, encourage some to come out to the front and take control of the Frankie puppet.
5 Table time: Spot’s portfolio worksheet
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Table time’. Play the Table time rhyme, motioning for the children to go back to their tables.
• Display the Unit 4 clothes flashcards. Establish that these are clothes we wear when the weather is cold. Say It’s cold. Put on your …and point to a particular flashcard. Elicit the clothes item from the class.
• Give out the Spot’s portfolio worksheet and explain that the children are going to draw themselves wearing clothes for cold weather. As this page will form part of their Portfolio, the children have two lessons in order to complete this worksheet.
• After Table Time, encourage the children to tidy up by singing or playing the Tidy up time song while they put away their worksheets.
6 Goodbye
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Goodbye’.
• Sing the Goodbye song. Have the puppets wave goodbye as you put them away.
