Extra activities

Tex’s words game

Use your interactive whiteboard to play the Tex’s words game any time from Lesson 1 onwards. Children explore the picture by clicking on the different items of winter clothing. On doing so, they will hear audio of that clothing item. You may wish to guide the activity more by saying, e.g. Click on Dizzy’s hat!

Tex’s words extra worksheet

Circle 4 differences. Encourage children to look at both pictures and circle the differences in the second picture. There are four to find. Once they have found them, encourage children to point and say what the differences are.

Pronunciation practice

Put up the winter clothes flashcards in the following order: socks, boots, sweater, jacket, hat, mittens. Play the word list pausing after each word to repeat the word and revise the correct action. Concentrate on pronouncing the words very clearly and accurately in this activity, and encourage the children to do the same.

Now without the CD, repeat the activity, varying the pace at which you say the words. Remember to keep focus on correct pronunciation throughout.

No, no, no, no, yes!

Sit the children in a circle. Choose a child to come into the middle and cover their eyes. Now give one of the clothes flashcards to another child in the circle. Everyone in the circle puts their hands behind their backs, including the child with the flashcard. The child in the middle uncovers their eyes and walks around the circle, trying to find the hidden flashcard. The rest of the class help by saying No, no, no, no… until the seeker reaches their classmate with the flashcard, when they say Yes! The child with the flashcard shows it to the group and everyone must say what is on the flashcard. Now repeat the game with different children and a different flashcard.

Mittens and socks matching

Fill a bag full of different coloured mittens and socks or alternatively, cut out pairs of each from different coloured felt.

Give one mitten or sock to each child and tell them they must find the other in the pair. Once everyone had found their ‘pair’ say, e.g. Stand up red mittens! and encourage the relevant couple to come to the front and either give you their socks or mittens or peg them to the washing line, if you have one.

Let’s make a snowman!

Tell the children that you are going to play a game about making a snowman. Divide the class into two groups and draw a line down the centre of the board.

Draw two snowmen, one in each section of the board. Give each snowman a head, plus body, arms and legs, but do not draw any clothes or facial features.

Shuffle the clothes and face flashcards (eyes, nose and mouth only) and put them face down. Pick the top card

but do not show the class. Encourage each team to guess which card you are holding. They must take it in turns to guess, and the team that guesses correctly gets that facial feature or item of clothing drawn onto their snowman.

Continue the game until one snowman is complete. That team are the winners.

Frankie talks game

Use your interactive whiteboard to play the Frankie talks game any time from Lesson 4 onwards. Click on the audio at the top of the screen and encourage the children to select the correct item of clothing. The activity has six frames.

Frankie talks extra worksheet

Make a book. The children colour and cut out the pictures before putting them in order. Go around the class stapling the pictures together to create a book. Use this book to practise the Frankie talks language by pointing at the item of clothing being put on in each picture and saying, e.g. Put on your socks.

Dress the snowman

For this you will need several items of the winter clothes learnt in the unit.

Select a child to come out and be a snowman. Invite children out to choose and name an item of winter clothing to dress the ‘snowman’. They choose an item of winter clothing and help the snowman put it on. Support this action by saying, e.g. Snowman, put on your sweater! Encourage the children to join in with as much target language as they are able.

Once the ‘snowman’ is dressed, tell the class to close their eyes. Change one item of clothing or take an item clothing away. Ask the children to uncover their eyes and guess what is different about the snowman. Help the children express themselves in English. If something has changed, they can just name that item of clothing. If something is missing, they can say No [+ the item of clothing].

Musical chairs

Set up two rows of chairs back to back, so there is one for every child in the class. Attach the clothes flashcards to six of the chairs, ensuring they are visible.

Play It’s cold outside while the children walk around the chairs singing along to the song. Stop the song at a random point and tell the children to sit down where they are. Choose a child sat on one of the flashcard chairs and ask them to name the item of clothing on their flashcard. Consolidate this by singing the relevant line of It’s cold outside, e.g. Put on your hat. It’s cold. Start the music again and repeat the procedure.

Unit review game

Use your interactive whiteboard to play the Unit review game. Match the pictures on the left to those on the right by clicking and dragging them into place.
