PHONICS LESSON
Lesson objectives
Practise pronouncing words with the sound /ɒ/ . Practise reading and listening to words with the sound /ɒ/ .

Materials
CD2 $ tracks 60 and 65–68; coloured pencils
Warmer $ 2•60
• Play the song from Lesson 4. The children join in with the singing.
Lead-in
• Ask the children to open their Class Books.
• Tell them that today they are going to practise words with the /ɒ/ sound as in oranges.
• Ask the children to look at the six pictures. Say Point to oranges, yoghurt, chocolate, doctor, frog.
• Introduce the word socks.
• The children repeat several times.
Class Book
1 Listen and repeat. $ 2•65
• Ask the children to listen and point to the small pictures as they hear the words. Play the recording.
• Tell the children all these words have a particular sound. Say the sound /ɒ/ and ask the children to repeat it.
• Explain that the highlighted letter o in the words is making this sound.
• Play the recording again, encouraging the children to listen and repeat. Repeat as necessary.
2 Listen and read the chant. $ 2•66
• Tell the children they are going to listen to a chant. Tell them to follow it in their books.
• Play the recording all the way through.
3 Listen and repeat. Listen and say the chant. $ 2•67
• Play the recording again, pausing after each line (or section of text) and encouraging the children to repeat.
• Play the recording one more time, this time encouraging the children to join in saying the chant with the recording.
Optional activity
• Divide the class into four big groups so each group can practise a line from the chant.
• Encourage the class to say the chant together without the recording, with each group saying their line in turn.
KEY COMPETENCES: Learning to learn
By learning a group of words with a common sound, the children are preparing the foundations for recognizing and categorizing words with the same sound in their future learning. Help them to see their progress by preparing a wall chart for the /ɒ/ sound and adding to it every time they come across a new word with the same sound.
Activity Book
1 Listen. Circle the words with o (oranges). Say. $ 2•68
• Ask the children to open their Activity Books and look at the pictures in Activity 1.
• Tell the children to listen and circle the words with the same sound as the /ɒ/ in oranges.
• Play the recording.
• Check the activity by eliciting the words with the same /ɒ/ sound.

• Ask the children to look at the matching activity and the example.
• Tell the children to match each part of the words and the corresponding picture with a different coloured pencil each time.
• Encourage the children to practise reading the words they made, using the correct pronunciation of the target sound.
