SAMPLE MATERIAL

The term ‘phonics’ refers to a method whereby children are taught to associate specific sounds with specific written letters or combinations of letters. Using these sounds and letters, children are then able to ‘decode’ or read simple words. It is one method used successfully with native speakers of English; however, as with anything, practice and variety count for a lot in getting children ready to read and confident at reading, and the time you choose to introduce the written word will depend on lots of different factors. That’s why we’ve included an Oxford Splash Phonics Multi-ROM which will provide you with a simple sequence of sounds and printable resources should you wish to introduce phonics to your class. This method offers two programmes, one that provides two years’ worth of material from EIN4 to EIN5, and one that covers one year, EIN5 only. Evaluation

Evaluation is an on-going aspect of Oxford Splash and the teaching notes give clear guidance on how and when to monitor each child’s progress. There are printable evaluation grids for you to download and use at the end of each term and year, plus there is a portfolio page in each unit that can be collated into a portfolio folder and passed on to the next tutor or to the parents as a record of work. There are suggestions for how to use the stickers effectively as a way of rewarding each child and assessing their progress. See the Lesson 8 ideas for more details. Parental involvement

Parental support and encouragement are essential to a child’s success in any subject.

Oxford Splash provides numerous opportunities for parents to share in their children’s English learning experience. All parents, even those who cannot speak English, can use the Oxford Splash resources available to them to support their children. It is highly motivating for parents to see their child’s progress in learning a foreign language – and many report that they end up learning some English, too!

The Class Books include a ‘Notes’ section towards the end of each unit which you can use to communicate the learning objectives of a particular unit or to pass a message on to the parents regarding the child’s progress. The Class Book also comes with a Songs CD so that children can sing the songs they have learnt at home. Many parents like the play this CD in the car to keep their children occupied.

The lesson notes include tips for including the parents as much as possible in the unit topics, such as ideas for items they can send in or topics they can research and talk about together. As they work through the course, the children will make mini-storybooks and pop-outs, which they can then take home and share with their families too.
