Materials

Tex apron, Frankie, Dizzy puppets Routine clock Washing line Weather flashcards Unit 4 flashcards Unit 4 storycards Audio CD1

1 Circle time andWeather routine

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Circle time’ before the start of class.

Start the class with the Circle time routine you have chosen to do with your class.

2 Game time: Bring me…

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Game time’.

Sit in a circle with your class. Hold up a Unit 4 clothes flashcard and say Put on your [+ item of clothing]. The children should act out putting on that item of clothing. Repeat the procedure for each flashcard.

Display the flashcards around the class at a height the children can reach, saying each word as you put up the card. Give individual children instructions to go and get a specific flashcard, saying, e.g. Blanca. Stand up and bring me the sweater, please! Repeat until all the flashcards have been collected in.

3 Song time: It’s cold outside

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Song time’.

Put up the Unit 4 clothes flashcards in the correct order for the song. Play It’s cold outside, encouraging the children to join in with the actions and sing along where they can. Alternatively, play the song on DVD.

Now divide the class into six groups, assigning one flashcard per group. Play the song again, encouraging the children in each group to stand and do the correct action when it is time for their item of clothing.

TEACHING TIP  If you feel your class require further practise of the Frankie talks language, there is an additional worksheet activity available on the Teacher’s Resource CD-ROM. See the Extra activities section for more information.

4 Game time: Try not to get mixed up!

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Game time’.

Arrange six children in a row at the front. Give each child a clothes flashcard.

Explain that each time you say a particular item of clothing, the child who has that item must hold it up high in the air.

To begin with, say the clothing words slowly in a random order. Once the children are familiar with the process, try to confuse them. For example, change the order of the items, alternate the speed at which you call out the items, and repeat the same item several times in a row. When a child gets mixed up, they must sit down and another child take their place.

5 Story time: Show what you know

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Story time’ and play the Story time rhyme.

Use the storycards to retell Let’s make a snowman! Use the comprehension questions and song references on the backs of the storycards to practise all the new language from the unit.

Encourage the whole class to get involved with acting out parts of the story. Use the puppets and Tex apron, as well as doing any relevant actions and using the unit pop-outs.

TEACHING TIP  You may wish to take the class to an area of the classroom where they can all lie down, in order to act out the final, snow angel scene.

6 Goodbye

If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Goodbye’.

Play the Goodbye song. Have the puppets wave goodbye as you put them away.
