Materials
Tex apron Routine clock Washing line Weather flashcards Unit 4 flashcards Unit 4 storycards Audio CD1
1 Circle time andWeather routine
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Circle time’ before the start of class.
• Start the class with the Circle time routine you have chosen to do with your class.
2 Revision
• As the unit is about cold weather, use the flashcards to revise all possible cold weather conditions: windy, rainy / raining, snowy / snowing, cold.
• Say Let’s sing the Weather song. Choose a cold weather flashcard at random and elicit what it is from the children. Play the Weather song and encourage the children to sing about the weather condition you have chosen.
TEACHING TIP When singing, make sure to exaggerate your weather actions to help children picture the weather.
• Repeat the procedure with the other cold weather flashcards, each time asking What’s the weather like? and trying to elicit the correct answer from the children.
3 Tex’s words: Vocabulary presentation
• If your class has studied Splash Starter, revise the summer clothes vocabulary, saying It’s cold! Put on your T-shirt / shorts / hat / sandals. Each time, encourage the children to say No! to indicate these clothes are not appropriate for the cold weather.
TEACHING TIP Children often become involved and vocal if they’re allowed to ‘correct’ your incorrect suggestions.
• Wearing the Tex apron, put the Unit 4 clothes flashcards in Tex’s shell pocket. Tell the children that Tex is going to teach them some new words. Play Tex’s words as you take out the flashcards one by one and show them to the children.
Tex’s words
Tex: Hello, everyone. It’s cold today! It’s snowy! Brrrrrr. Put on your socks. Put on your boots. Put on your sweater. Put on your jacket. Put on your hat … and your mittens, too!
• Play the track again, teaching the actions for each item of clothing. Encourage children to copy the actions as they hear each item of clothing.
• Suggested actions:
Sweater – pretend to pull sweater over your head and fold down arms.
Jacket – pretend to pull on jacket and do up zip. Socks – pretend to pull on socks.
Boots – stamp both feet as if wearing boots. Hat – pretend to put on hat using both hands. Mittens – pretend to pull on your mittens hand by hand.
• You may also wish to play the word list to help consolidate the new vocabulary further. Again, encourage the class to repeat the actions as they hear the words.
Unit 1 word list
Socks, boots, sweater, jacket, hat, mittens
• If you have time, this is also a good opportunity to revise colours, pointing to each flashcard and asking, e.g. What colour are the socks? What colour is the jacket?
4 Story time: Let’s make a snowman!
• If you have a routine clock, move the hand to ‘Story time’ and play the Story time rhyme, encouraging the children to join in with the actions.
• To help set the context of the story, show the children the weather flashcard for snow and sing the weather song.
Weather song (karaoke version)
Oh it’s snowy today, yes it is! Oh, it’s snowy today, yes it is! Oh, it’s snowy today, Oh, it’s snowy today, Oh, it’s snowy today, yes it is!
• Tell the children they are going to hear a story about Frankie, Tex, Dizzy and Spot. You can choose to play the story on the CD and use the storycards, or play the DVD.
Let’s make a snowman!
1 Narrator It’s winter. It’s cold. Very, very cold.
Frankie Let’s make a snowman!
Tex OK!
Spot Snowman!
Dizzy Yes, yes! Let’s make a snowman! But, I’m cold.
